I do a combination of mostly a hard round brush for most of my brush strokes (about 70% of the time) and then I use a couple different texture brushes as well to try and add some texture. As far as shading, I'm not sure if I totally understand your question but basically I just blend color by putting down a stroke and then hitting the alt key (color picker) to pick up the color and blending it again. I basically repeat over and over to blend two colors together. Also I usually try and have some sort of reference to get my lighting and shadows closer to being realistic (still working on that though lol

). Hope this helps a little.
